Most students describe the experience as calm, supportive, and low-pressure.
Instruction is practical and conversational, with plenty of time for questions and hands-on learning. There’s no rush, no judgment, and no expectation that you “already know” anything.
My goal is for every student to leave feeling safer, more informed, and more confident than when they arrived.

Red Oak Defense offers individualized firearms instruction focused on safety, fundamentals, and confidence-building.
Services include the NRA Basic Pistol course (which satisfies Connecticut’s training requirement for a pistol permit and eligibility certificates), private one-on-one instruction, small group sessions for friends or family members, and refresher training for people who already have experience but want to feel more confident and comfortable.
All instruction is paced to the student. There’s no intimidation, no pressure, and no “boot camp” teaching style.

To apply for a Connecticut pistol permit, you must meet several eligibility requirements set by state law and your local issuing authority. While individual police departments may have minor local procedures, the core legal requirements are generally consistent across the state:
Training and age
You must be at least 21 years old to apply for a pistol permit in Connecticut. Before submitting your application, you are required to complete an approved firearms safety course that meets the state’s basic pistol training requirement, such as the NRA Basic Pistol Course.Application & Background
Applicants must complete the official Connecticut pistol permit application form, submit it to their local police department or resident state trooper, and pay the required fees (often around $70). A background check and fingerprinting are conducted as part of the process.Eligibility Standards
Even if you meet training and age requirements, you must also be a “suitable person” under state law and not be disqualified by statute. Common reasons an application can be denied include:Being under age 21.
Having been convicted of a felony or certain violent misdemeanors (including some family violence or domestic violence offenses).
Being subject to a protective or restraining order involving the use or threat of force.
Having certain recent mental health adjudications (such as confinement to a psychiatric facility).
Being prohibited under federal law due to mental health findings or other disqualifiers.
If you meet all eligibility criteria and your background check is clear, your local authority will issue a temporary permit, and the state will issue a five-year pistol permit upon final approval.

Red Oak Defense is intentionally small, personal, and calm.
Instruction is designed for everyday people—not competition shooters, not internet tough guys, and not students who want to be rushed or talked down to. Questions are encouraged, mistakes are expected, and learning happens at a pace that feels comfortable.
The focus is on understanding, safety, and confidence—not showing off or checking a box.
-
Many lower-priced classes are large group sessions taught in a classroom with a dozen or more students, followed by a short range qualification. That approach works for some people, but it isn’t what Red Oak Defense is designed to offer.
Red Oak Defense focuses on private or small-group instruction. That means the entire day is built around you—your experience level, your questions, and your pace. There’s no rushing to keep up with a group and no pressure to perform in front of strangers.
The cost also reflects what’s included. Range time and ammunition are provided, so there are no surprise add-ons. During the class, I also help you complete your local pistol permit application and notarize the required paperwork, so you leave knowing exactly what to do next.
If you’re looking for the lowest-cost way to check a box, a large group class may be a better fit. If you want calm, individualized instruction and support through the entire process, that’s what Red Oak Defense is built for.

No. If you’re brand new, you do not need to own a firearm to take the class.
Firearms are provided for training purposes, and we’ll cover safe handling, operation, and fundamentals before any live-fire takes place.
If you already own a firearm and would like to train with it, that can usually be accommodated.
-
Pricing depends on the type of instruction and whether the session is one-on-one or a small group.
There are no surprise fees, and you’ll always know what to expect before scheduling. I won’t upsell services or push training that isn’t appropriate for your goals.
See the services page for specific pricing.

Getting a Connecticut pistol permit is a multi-step process, but it’s very manageable once you understand what to expect.
In general, the process looks like this:
Complete a required firearms safety course
Connecticut requires applicants to complete an approved handgun safety course, such as the NRA Basic Pistol class. This provides the training certificate needed to apply.
Submit your application to your local town or police department
You’ll complete the state application and submit it to your town along with your training certificate and other required documents. Some paperwork must be notarized.
Fingerprinting and background check
Your town will arrange fingerprinting and conduct state and federal background checks as part of the application process.
Receive a temporary permit from your town
If approved, your town issues a temporary pistol permit. This allows you to move on to the final step.
Obtain your state permit
With your temporary permit, you’ll visit a Connecticut State Police location to receive your official state pistol permit.
Red Oak Defense walks students through this process during the class, including completing paperwork correctly and notarizing required documents, so you leave knowing exactly what your next steps are. Application processes vary somewhat by town; this is a general overview.
